Restaurant & dinner

Dinner photos go wrong before anyone lifts a phone, in the choice of where to sit. Pick the seat with the soft light, skip the flash, and a tricky room becomes a warm, intimate one.

The usual miss

Restaurant light is the hard mode of indoor photography: dim, tinted orange, and coming from straight overhead or a flickering candle below. The camera can't cope, so it either fires the flash — nuking the candlelit mood and bouncing off every glass on the table — or it brightens the dark by going grainy. And the seat was chosen for comfort, not light, so she's lit from above with shadows pooling under her eyes.
