Posing fundamentals

Most people freeze when a camera comes out because nobody ever told them what to do with their body. A few simple defaults take the guesswork away and make her look relaxed and elegant on purpose.

A woman standing at a three-quarter angle, weight on her back foot, a gap between her arm and her waist, one hand relaxed in a pocket.

The annotated breakdown is inside.

The usual miss

Square to the camera, arms pinned flat to the sides, weight dead-even on both feet, hands with nowhere to go. It's the default everybody falls into the second a lens points at them — and it flattens the body into a single block, presses the arms wide, and reads as stiff. Then she sees the photo and decides she's "not photogenic." She is. The pose just had no instructions.
